Pictured below are sketches that Pelagie Doane sent to Margaret Sutton for approval before volume 10, The Riddle of the Double Ring, was published. The sketches are much more impressive when seen in person than what is seen on this page. While the sketches are just rough charcoal sketches, there is a greater depth in the sketches than in the final images that appear in the book. My person favorite is the sketch which has the caption, "You're a plucky girl, all right." The sketch has a rough look that makes the jail appear to be a much more dark and grim place than in the final picture. For the purpose of comparison, the sketches have been placed next to scans of the glossy illustrations.
